Fifty years ago, four years before the incorporation of the city of Thousand Oaks,
a small group of friends began meeting to worship in a rented basement. Under the
sponsorship of St. Columba’s Church in Camarillo, they were granted Mission status as St. Patrick’s Church, and the Reverend James England, Jr. was appointed to serve as Vicar for the new Mission. That same year, St. Patrick’s opened the Mad Attic Thrift Shop, and established a tradition of outreach and activism in the Conejo Valley that continues to this day. Shortly thereafter the Diocesan Standing Committee approved plans to build a church on property donated by Bill and Janet Rothschild. Three years later, and less than a year after the completion of the church building, the Church founded St. Patrick’s Day School, a remarkable achievement for a church in Mission status. Much has happened in the ensuing half century, but enthusiasm, optimism and faith demonstrated by the founders continues to characterize St. Patrick’s Church. In that spirit, it seems appropriate to reflect on and celebrate both the past achievements and future potential of St. Patrick’s Episcopal Church. Please join us for a week of festivities which will coincide with the Patronal Feast Day, St. Patrick’s Day, March 17, 2010.
